How Lola Coring Met Lolo Jose
Meant for Each Other...
Lola Coring met Lolo Jose when the latter paid a visit to his cousins (the family of Lolo Rufino Kiamco) in Bukidnon. Lolo first knew Lola Coring's father, Lolo Rufino Medalla when he was working as construction staff under the supervision of Lolo Rufino Kiamco, as the two Rufino's were neighbours. When he first met Lola Coring, the eldest of the Medalla children, Lolo Jose was absolutely smitten by Lola Coring's charms and simple ways. Lola Coring, on her part must have fallen for Lolo Jose's straightforward ways and extraordinary sense of discipline.
They married on November 19, 1942 and because it was the second world war, they did not have a wedding photo. After their wedding, Lolo continued working in Malaybalay, with his last assignment as Bureau of Constabulary in the police detachment in Linabo, Malaybalay, Bukidnon where their first child, Edith was born.
Lola moved with Lolo Jose to Carmen, Cebu after Edith's birth, and there she continued teaching young graders. Her early assignments were on the remote barangays in Carmen and everytime a new assignment is given to her, the growing family would move house with her until she was finally given a place in the town proper's public elementary school in 1955. They were able to secure a lot near the school where Lola was teaching and there they built what we now refer as the Alinday ancestral house - which became not only a home for their five children but our first home as well. We will always remember Lola as a "Mother of Perpetual Help" herself choosing to spend her golden years raising us, her grandchildren when she could have done otherwise.
